Bridging Communication Gaps: Pic-A-Talk’s TWINKLE Workshop Illuminates AAC Strategies

On October 14, 2024, Pic-A-Talk proudly hosted TWINKLE (Teaching Workshop for Innovative New AAC Knowledge and Language Education), an insightful and interactive workshop focused on expanding awareness and expertise in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Held online via Zoom from 1 PM to 4 PM, the event gathered participants from diverse fields who were eager to learn practical tools to improve communication accessibility for individuals with complex communication needs.

The event featured two distinguished speakers. Patrick Marvin P. Bulan, a compassionate and accomplished speech-language pathologist, led the main session. Specializing in supporting individuals with hearing loss and complex communication needs, Patrick is certified in AAC and holds an accreditation in hearing implant rehabilitation from MED-EL.

His role as a faculty member at Cebu Doctors’ University allows him to mentor future speech-language pathologists, and he is an active member of the Philippine Association of Speech-Language Pathologists AAC Special Interest Group (PASP – AAC SIG). Patrick’s dedication to improving lives through AAC, along with his work in aural habilitation and rehabilitation services in Cebu City, has positioned him as a vital advocate for AAC awareness.

Uma Louise C. Roa, the Chief Executive Officer of Pic-A-Talk, also shared insights into the development of the Pic-A-Talk application, an educational mobile app designed to assist children in speech and language development. With a user-friendly and customizable interface, Pic-A-Talk offers accessible language development tools, reflecting Uma’s commitment to breaking down barriers in communication and education.

The app’s collaborative and dynamic approach allows for a seamless switch between Child Mode and Parent Mode, enabling real-time customization and flexibility to meet diverse communication needs.

Pic-A-Talk extends its gratitude to everyone who participated in TWINKLE, fostering greater understanding and commitment to AAC. By equipping educators, professionals, and families with tools to enhance communication, TWINKLE marks a significant step toward creating an inclusive world where everyone has the opportunity to express themselves. Pic-A-Talk looks forward to hosting future workshops, providing resources, and contributing to developments in AAC and educational technology.
